ACCOMPLISHMENTS SHERIFF JIMMY ASHE
- Rededicated funding for a Chief Deputy position to allow for more patrol officers to patrol our communities
- Continues the “Shop with a Cop Program”, and is currently within it’s 7th year of success
- Established two School Resource Deputies at Southwestern Community College without an increase to the Sheriff’s Budget
- Revenues from Asset Forfeiture and Unauthorized Controlled Substance Taxes have dramatically increased and been used to enhance funding to the Sheriff’s Office at no further burden to the law abiding citizens of Jackson County.
- As a result of a previously created Courtroom Security Task Force that Sheriff Ashe established, security measures at the Jackson County Justice Center have been improved with the addition of digital cameras, metal detectors, security, and procedural guidelines, thus providing a safer courtroom.
- By actively seeking out those who sell and use illegal drugs, we have reduced the crime rate dramatically in Jackson County.
- The Community Watch Program now reaches nearly 40 Communities that have now been established.
- Has joined efforts with Program called “Refuse to be a Victim” with a focus on the prevention of crimes against the elderly and youth of our County.
- Entering a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson County Council on Aging to provide “Project Lifesaver” a program designed to help located elderly persons with Alzheimer’s and other mental disabilities of this nature through the use of tracking devices
- Officer response time has been reduced by establishing our 3rd substation. Officers are dispersed throughout the county in each of the districts: South District that covers Glenville and Cashiers; South Central District that covers Tuckaseigee, Caney Fork, and Canada; Central District that covers Sylva and Cullowhee; and North District that covers Balsam, Savannah, and Qualla. We have brought law enforcement services to the community.
- Through implementation of mandated training and the creation of a policy and procedure manual, officers have been given tools to provide professional law enforcement services to the community, while improving officer safety.
- The Chaplains Program has grown to 23 established volunteer Chaplains, of which all have completed the training program. This program has been successful in addressing jail ministries, crisis situations in the community, and spiritual needs of the officers. Chaplains arrive every Thursday night for Jail Ministries.
- Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous have established a working relationship with our Chaplains Program to further enhance inmate enrichment
- We now have IT connectivity, as well as with law enforcement agencies throughout the state, through which information is readily available and shared. This has enabled our office to upgrade access to sex offender files to our citizens, also.
- Mutual aid agreements have been developed with law enforcement agencies within the 16 western counties of North Carolina. We also have excellent working relationships with state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies.
- We have been aggressive and successful in educational programs within the community and school system. These programs have addressed drugs, violence, and other crimes to which our citizens could become victims.
- We have implemented over 30 Community Watch Programs in the County and conducted numerous “Refuse To Be a Victim” seminars which address concerns of the children and seniors. The “Shop With a Cop” Program is also a successful outreach to our children.
- Three K-9 units have been established.
- We have established a two-man traffic enforcement unit which is a mechanism to improve safety on our streets and highways.
- An inmate work crew was established which provides free services to our nonprofit organizations, county departments, and roadside litter cleanup
- This agency has been successful in their endeavor to hire and retain quality law enforcement officers and provide the most up-to-date training techniques for our officers.
- Our web page was designed to provide information for the citizens about our agency and relevant law enforcement news.
- We have a Crime Stoppers Hotline in place for citizens to call in and leave anonymous tips for criminal activities occurring in our county, as well as reporting suspicious activity through the internet.
- Opened new Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center.
- Largest cash seizure in Jackson County history ($100,000 +).
- Implementation of Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Established a Crime Stoppers Program with telephone and e-mail access. This has been successful in establishing an anonymous link to the Office of the Sheriff to report useful information that has proven here in Jackson County to solve crimes.
- The Crime Stoppers Program has established a useful Rewards Program to help encourage citizens to share their information to the Office of the Sheriff. Without the use of this program there would have been crimes go unsolved within Jackson County.
- Drug Interdiction Community Enforcement Team.
- Developed strong working relationships with local, state, federal and national agencies.
- Continues his initiative to further Community Policing within Jackson County to further enhance the Trust between the Sheriff and the Citizens he serves.
- Established patrol districts (North, Central, and South).
- Established North District Substation
- Established information technology for office and staff accountability purposes.
- Weekly newspaper articles (prevention/education and to keep citizens well-informed).
- Bimonthly radio shows which keep the citizens well-informed.
- Established mutual aid with every county from Henderson-West.
- Awarded nearly $1,000,000 in grant money – continually, diligently seeking out new sources.
- Established Employee Recognition Program.
